Welcome

Hi and welcome to the Tri-C Elementary School Counseling Web Page. My name is Lisa Stanton, the School Counselor here at Tri-C Elementary. I am available to help you and your child have a successful school year. As a school counselor, I work with parents and students in different ways through a program of many services. Each service is aimed at helping children learn and develop to their highest potential. Some of the services in the school counseling program are:

*Groups to help children with similar concerns.

*Individual sessions to help children adjust to school.

These are a few of the services I offer for your child. If you have questions or wish to see me about your child, please call me at school. The number is 985-8742. The best time to reach me is between 7:30 and 8:00a.m. or after 2:45 p.m.

Breakfast Challenge 2012

Parents,

Welcome to a new year, 2012. Here at Tri-C we are focusing our efforts on helping our students be their very best.  One very important component in helping your child be their very best is providing a good breakfast. The benefits of breakfast have been well researched and remember we have a convenient, nutritious school breakfast program right here at Tri-C.

The following are key reasons why breakfast should be made a priority for every child:

Breakfast equals better behavior

Children who skip breakfast are more tired, irritable, or restless by late morning. These symptoms lead to aggressive behavior that causes children to get in trouble in school. Children who regularly eat a morning meal have more energy, are less likely to exhibit aggressive behavior, and have a better attitude toward school.

Breakfast leads to higher test scores

A study published in 1998 in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine showed significantly higher math test scores after children ate breakfast. This and other research has clearly shown that children who consistently eat breakfast test higher in most academic areas.

Eating breakfast led to better class attendance

Children who eat breakfast are absent from school fewer days. They also spend less time in the nurse's office complaining of stomach pains.

More nutritious intake by eating breakfast

Breakfast eaters generally meet vitamin and mineral requirements for prevention of deficiencies. They consume more fiber, vitamin C, calcium and folic acid. Unfortunately, children who miss breakfast do not make up for lost nutrients later in the day.

Eating breakfast helps weight control

Eating breakfast helps to establish a normal eating pattern. Eating regular meals and snacks is a key to maintaining a healthy weight throughout life. Increasing childhood obesity is in part attributed to the disappearance of normal eating patterns in many of today's households. (Katie Clark, MPH, RD)

Activities Planned for Breakfast Challenge 2012

January 3-6                         Classroom Presentations Grades K-4

January 31-Feb 4              Top Five at Tri-C – Students will vote for their five favorite breakfasts and the Top Five will be the breakfast menu for this week.

January 2012                      Coloring contest – Winners for each grade level will be displayed in the lunchroom for all to view.

In addition to the importance of a great breakfast, a good night’s sleep is very important. Again research indicates that student performance and overall behaviors are optimal when a child has sufficient rest. Let’s work together to make 2012 a great year for your child.
