Class 306 Weekly News              January 5th, 2009
I hope everyone had a great break! I am excited to be back to school and am ready to get down to business.   It is time to get serious about our test taking skills and making sure the students are prepared to do their best on ISAT.  The expectations for the third quarter will be changing a little.  Please be on the look out for a detailed letter to come home this week.

Language Arts Block

Reading: This week's reading story is entitled Volcanoes.  We will continue to learn new vocabulary, work on author's purpose, and using learned information to compare and contrast facts.

English:  The grammar concept that will be taught this week is irregular verbs.  Irregular verbs do not follow the rule of adding /ed/ to show past tense but change to other words.  (Ex.  begin, began, and has begun  AND  do, did, have done)

Spelling:  ALERT!  As we move to the third quarter, we will begin testing on all 20 words.  That means your child will be responsible for the challenge words too!  We are also going to move away from having a pretest on Wednesdays.  I will be testing the students on Friday only!

Math Block

We will start chapter four on the 5th.  Chapter four includes time, data, and graphs.  We will start off reviewing time to the hour and half hour and then move on to telling time to the quarter hour and time to the minute.

Science Block

We will begin science again this third quarter.  We will start on Unit C which is Earth Science.  Unit C consists of three chapters: Changes in the Earth's Surface, Materials of the Earth, and the Sun, Planets, and Moon.  There will be two big projects this nine weeks.  We will be making volcanoes with the first chapter and then do an oral report in conjunction with chapter three.

Dates to remember:
  • Jan. 6th PTO meeting @6:30
  • Jan. 9th report cards come home
  • Jan. 13th Tri-C Blood Drive
  • No school Jan. 19th.
