Mrs. Dawson Prep (1st semester =5th hour; 2nd semester =6th hour) In English III, there will be a variety of topics and assignments covered. We will study the history of American literature through short stories, novels, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. We will also review grammar (ACT/PSAE), write many essays, and study vocabulary. Some requirements of the class: *Essays (personal, expository, persuasive) *Research paper (second semester)—CLASS REQUIREMENT *Flowers for Algernon *Of Mice and Men *”The Crucible” *1-3 independent novels
RULES FOR LATE DAILY WORK: 50% deducted first late day then a 0 (student handbook)
LATE ESSAYS: One letter grade deducted each late day.
EXCUSED ABSENCES: See student handbook.
UNEXCUSED/TRUANCY/IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION/OUT-OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSION: Work is to be turned in or made up the day returned for 50% credit (student handbook).
FINAL EXAM POLICY: See student handbook.
CLASSROOM RULES 1. Show respect! 2. Be in your seat when the bell rings. Stay in your seat the entire class period. 3. No food, drink, or candy. Water in a water bottle only is acceptable. 4. Always come to class prepared with class binder, pen/pencil, book, and planner. IF YOU DO NOT BRING YOUR BOOK, YOU MAY RENT ONE FOR A QUARTER OR RECEIVE A DETENTION. 5. The first tardy each nine weeks is a free pass. The second tardy is one detention, the third tardy is two detentions, and the fourth tardy is four detentions. 6. Each student will receive 1 locker/bathroom/drink pass per week only when utilizing his/her own planner. No exceptions. Never ask at the beginning of the hour (only at the end when working quietly).
GRADING SCALE: A=93-100 D=68-75 B=84-92 E=67-below C=76-83 ESSAY/HOMEWORK RULES 1. All work is due at the beginning of the hour. If you need to print work from a disk, do so before the class period (work will be counted late, otherwise). 2. All essays must be typed, double-spaced, and include a title. I WILL NOT ACCEPT HANDWRITTEN ESSAYS. 3. In the top, left-hand corner of an essay, you must double-space the following: NAME TEACHER CLASS DATE 4. Fifteen points will be deducted for not following directions.
CHEATING POLICY 1. Detention and 0 for first occurrence unless otherwise explained. 2. The office will be notified and a call to your parents will be made. 3. Both the students receiving and giving the answers will be penalized. 4. Cheating includes “1. Obtaining or accepting a copy of a test or answers to a test. 2. Copying another student’s answers during an exam. 3. Providing another student with answers during an exam. 4. Representing as one’s work, the product of someone else. This might be homework, research papers, projects, etc. 5. Any other actions intended to obtain credit for work not one’s own. 6. Possessing another student’s homework. 7. Providing work to another student for the purpose of copying.” 5. Any form of plagiarism is also cheating (copying or paraphrasing from the internet is included). *plagiarize: “To take (ideas, writings, etc.) from another and pass them off as one’s own.”
GRADES 1. Grades are not weighted. 2. Test grades can range from 75-200 points. 3. Essays range from 100-200 points. 4. Daily work and quizzes can range from 10-100 points. 5. Projects can range from 100-300 points. 6. Notebook grades will be taken every quarter (150 points). 7. Typically, a student can accumulate close to 2300 points in a semester.
EXPECTATIONS 1. Take notes during all class discussions (use date and heading). 2. Have book open during all discussions. 3. Utilize time given in class for reading and homework assignments. 4. Attend class consistently. 5. Ask me questions during class, after class, or during my prep period. 6. Allow me to look over essay rough drafts completed early. 7. Use planners to keep track of all class work. |
