About Me
Welcome to
the 2011-2012 school year! I am excited to be
working with your junior high student this year. I
previously taught English at Carterville High School and
English and Honors Psychology at Belleville East
High School; this is my second year teaching language
arts at the junior high level. I graduated from Marion High School in 1997 and earned a
Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Union University
and a Master of Arts in Teaching English from SIU-C.
I
look forward to meeting you and your student!
What's
Currently Going on in the Classroom?
For the
first two weeks, we will write a paper comparing and
contrasting the movie Tangled to The True
Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. We will then delve
into the world of poetry, where we will learn poetry
terms, how to read and analyze a poem, and how to
compose various types of poems. This quarter, we
will also prepare for the ISAT test that student will
take at the end of February. Students will also be
reading an independent non-fiction book, preferably a
biography or autobiography, and will complete an
assignment over the book by the end of the quarter. We
will continue the parts of speech in grammar and
continue Wordly Wise spelling and vocabulary. Toward the
end of the quarter, we will begin literature circles.
Students will have the opportunity to choose a high
interest book pertaining to our class theme of adventure
and survival.
This year's
theme is survival and adventure. In addition to
applying literary terms throughout the texts we read and
making personal connections to the readings, through the
adventures of various characters, students will learn to
think critically about decisions involving emotional,
physical, academic, and social survival.
